Louis Tompkins Wright (July 23, – October 8, ) [1] was an American surgeon and civil rights activist. In his position at Harlem Hospital he was the first African-American on the surgical staff of a non-segregated hospital in New York City.

Louis Wright served in France as a physician and Captain in the U.S. Army in World War I. There he successfully implemented life-saving treatments and suffered exposure to poison gas that led to both a Purple Heart and a lifelong respiratory illness. Wright graduated from Clark University in Atlanta, GA, in 1911 as class valedictorian, and graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1915.
